Stephen Scott

Stephen Scott is an author, strategic leadership practitioner and founder of ETHICLEAD. His work draws on more than four decades of leadership practice, leadership development and a longstanding interest in what enables leaders to build ethical, capable and strategically effective organisations.

For more than 15 years, Stephen has worked extensively within Australia’s independent school sector. He has developed and mentored principals, aspiring principals and executive leaders, and worked with school governing bodies, giving him a deep appreciation of the distinctive strategic, organisational, workforce and governance challenges facing contemporary schools.

His contribution to the sector includes designing and facilitating leadership development for Independent Schools Queensland’s New and Aspiring Principals programs and mentoring hundreds of school leaders. Stephen has also served as Chair of Council of an independent school, bringing a governance perspective to his understanding of school leadership and the relationship between boards and executive teams.

Stephen brings a strong academic and professional foundation to his work, combining formal education with extensive board and executive experience. Before establishing ETHICLEAD, he served 22 years in the Royal Australian Air Force, including in senior executive roles. Over the past two decades, his work through ETHICLEAD has extended across education, public health, engineering, environmental science, renewable energy, aviation, agriculture and defence. This breadth of experience allows him to bring insights from diverse and demanding environments to the challenges facing education leaders today.

Stephen is the author of Ethics Trump Power and The 15 Disciplines: The Essential Checklist for Productive Leaders, and creator of The 15 Disciplines leadership framework. His approach places ethical purpose, disciplined leadership behaviour and organisational capability at the heart of effective leadership.

Today, Stephen’s particular focus is strategic leadership in schools: helping leaders better understand their environment, make deliberate choices, mobilise their people and resources, and turn strategic intent into sustained action. At the heart of his work is a simple belief: building a school’s strategic capability begins with building the capability of its leaders.
